To many people, the terms hoverboard, skateboard and self-balancing electric scooter may offer a lot of confusion. In fact, the terms hoverboard and self-balancing electric scooter have been used in recent times to mean one and the same thing while, in a real sense, these are two different products altogether.
These three products, which are the skateboard, hoverboard and self-balanced electric scooter are all different. They different right from who manufactures them, mode of propulsion and drive train to their general shape and size. The only single common feature among the three is that a rider has to step on them to use them.
Although the hoverboards, skateboards and electric scooters, all function to get one from point A to point B by one having to step on them, they have a slight difference in their structure and shape of the boards.
The one with the simplest shape of them all is the skateboard.
The skateboard is basically a specially designed board made out of Maplewood coupled with a polyurethane coating to make the board more durable.
Skateboards have roller skate wheels at the bottom to provide the required movement. A traditional skateboard consists of three main components which are a deck, the board on which one will stand on, trucks: which are two metallic structures attached to the bottom of the deck and wheels which are attached to the trucks.
The skateboard’s main mode of propulsion is one where the skateboarder propels himself by placing one of their feet on the board while pushing themselves with the other from the ground. A skateboarder can also employ the use of gravity while on a slope to freely propel them.
Today, however, there are the electric hoverboards which are basically modified skateboards with an electric motor for self-propulsion. Although there is no record of who invented the skateboard, it is believed that using and making skateboards started sometime in the 1950s where people started making skateboard using wooden crates and roller skate tires.
Today, skateboards have grown to be very popular and skateboarding is considered a growing sport. One can make their own skateboard although there are many companies which manufacture skateboards making them easily available at any store.
Self-Balancing Electric Scooters
Self-balancing electric scooters are a lot similar to the skateboard while still maintaining a lot of uniqueness from the skateboard. As the name suggests, these scooters are self-balancing meaning that they automatically help you maintain you balance as you move around using the device.
The self-balancing electric scooter consists of two wheels which are joined by two platforms on which the rider stands on. The device has an internal balancing mechanism and gyroscopic sensors. The scooter is controlled by the rider’s feet for both direction and speed.
Unlike the traditional skateboard, the self-balancing scooter is battery powered and can reach speeds of up to 12 mph. The self-balancing scooter is powered by a rechargeable battery.
The self-balancing electric scooter was invented by a company in China. Although it is not clear which company was the brainchild behind this device, it is believed that Chic Robotics was the firm behind the device’s invention. The company first showcased the Smart S1, their first version of the scooter at the 2014 canton fair where it was a huge success. Other Chinese firms immediately reverse engineered the device and started manufacturing the scooter.Today, there are a number of companies which manufacturers the scooter, all in China with companies such as IO hawk and Phunkeeduck, as major self-balancing scooter distribution companies in the United States. Companies like CoolReall, Swagway and HP95 are major players too.
Unlike self-balancing scooters and skateboards, electric hoverboards haven’t been made a reality just yet. They are still being developed. The idea behind hoverboards was derived from the film, “Back to the future II”, where there is a character who rides a skateboard that hovers over the ground.
Many companies have tried making this hoverboard a reality, but very few have succeeded in doing so. There are however two companies which seem to be making some progress and suddenly the idea of a hoverboard can soon become a reality.
The first company is Lexus, which created a hoverboard with which is loaded with magnets. This hoverboard, however, requires a fresh supply of liquid nitrogen at all times and a track which is also full of magnets. This means that the possibility of a hoverboard is still a little far off.
Another company, Hendo, seems to be making a lot of progress on making hoverboards. The company developed a hoverboard which works on the magnetic levitation principle. The hoverboard, however, requires non-ferromagnetic metal surfaces such as aluminium for it to function.
